So you want to start a blog?? They are a lot of posts out there on how to start a blog. This isn’t that post, this is that post about what you need to start a blog.
You can start a blog, about anything these days and it would be successful. If you had a thought of how to start a blog, and you weren’t sure how or what steps to take this post is for you. I will be laying down the exact steps you need to take and the ones that might have been forgotten.
The Steps
Most of these steps are for people beginners who may not have the finances and also for beginners who may have the money to start a blog.
- First a foremost before your start a blog, Think long term, in the sense that your blog is a brand, that you can create multiple income streams that will support your blogging brand.
1. Name, Niche,& Branding
- Niche
Picking a niche isn’t that necessary, but it shouldn’t be a forgotten thought, industry pros do say that you should niche down, which is a great thing and it makes you an expert in that niche.
I have a post about How To Find your Niche and it comes free to the workbook to help you pick a niche that is long-lasting.
- Name
What are you going to call your blog? A name can help you create a logo. The name of your blog will be semi-permeant because you will be building a brand around that name. For me, all my businesses have something to do with my last name.
If you want to know how I came up with my blog name check out my post.
- Branding:
Brand Colours: I will admit this is the hardest thing to do, I am currently still struggling with it since I am a minimalist but this website will help you come up with a color palette is Coolors.
Picking a Theme: You can start with the free ones, then invest in another one when the time comes. Or work with a web developer to create a web design you like. (Shameless plug hoping to add web development to my skillset, next year)
Here are some website designs links

2. Picking a Platform:
WordPress and Blogger are the biggest ones in the market. You can start a blog for free on either of these platforms.
Both have great pros and cons, when it comes to deciding which platform works for you weigh your options. My reason for choosing WordPress, was because I used to live in China when I restarted my blog and blogger since in part of google I couldn’t access it, I already had a blogger site when, I was younger, and wanted something different.
3. A Hosting Plan and Domain Name
When you decide to move from a free version, and you want to have a .com,.net at the end of your blog name.
You would need to purchase a Domain Name and Pick a Hosting Site. When I was doing, my research they were two, two competing were Site ground and Bluehost, but of late they are many more options like Squarespace, Improved Godaddy( hoping to move to this one soon), and many more.
4.Business Pinterest Account:
Set up a Pinterest account, then switch to a business account, ps have a different one than the one you use to search for ideas. Pinterest is an untapped market that will give you the most traffic on your blog, if done right, invest in Tailwind which will take the pressure off when it comes to daily pinning and to creating pins.
Those are 4 four steps you would need to start a blog and it to be successful.
